SANGRE DE MI SANGRE - Santa Madre
Santa Madre translates literally as Saint Mother. I began this series working with Ashley Yoshida, reinterpreting this Catholic title in our own lives as mothers of young children who we were raising in Mexico. These self-portraits of my family translate everyday agonies and ecstacies through the formula of Renaissance paintings. I was inspired both by the Northern Renaissance art I studied in graduate school as well as the tableaux created in the streets outside my door of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. While some of these works are direct translations of paintings from that time, others are loosely based on the themes.
